Criminals caught selling snow leopard meat and skin
The Environmental Crime Division of the National Police Agency of Mongolia investigated and found several misconducts on illegal hunting in the capital city of Mongolia in January 2019. According to the press representative of the National Police Agency, criminals have transported seven bear's claws, organs, and several frozen Altai stopcocks. Also, police officers are investigating three snow leopard's skin, skull, and frozen meat which was about to be sold.
Detection of illegal hunting and illegal wildlife products is not an easy task. Because such crimes are organized. As a result of close collaboration between law enforcement agencies, citizens and the public, it is possible to reduce this threat. A clear example is the establishment of the Sub-commission on Prevention of Environmental Crimes by WWF-Mongolia’s initiative that coordinates the activities of the government law enforcement agencies including National Police Agency. The police point out that the establishment of the sub-commission has improved the coordination of law enforcement agencies and increased case detection.
Despite progress in the fight against poaching, illegal trade in an animal-based product is not decreasing. Therefore, there is a need to intensify the cooperation of government agencies, to facilitate quick exchange of information, to improve the professional knowledge and skills of the personnel via joint training, promotion, supervision, and inspection.
