Marmot reintroduction in Nature Reserve continues successfully
This year, there were additional 50 marmots brought and released in the NR. In the meantime, the marmot re-introduction project has been implemented in Bayan-Tsagaan Tal NR and in the vicinity of Matad Mountain where 50 marmots were re-introduced in each, with co-financing of the project and local government. WWF-Mongolia specialists and the park rangers jointly designated the marmot re-introduction points upon consideration of the previous suitable habitats and breeding success histories of the species population in the parks.
Before starting the pilot project on the ground, some researchers from National University of Mongolia had a field study on vegetation and habitat features in Khar Yamaat NR to scientifically define the most suitable sites for the marmot re-introduction project. Local residents were fully in favour of the project proposal expressed their willingness to take part in the project activities. All these positive efforts led to successful project implementation, where there were initially 50 marmot individuals brought from Khustai National Park for re-introduction in the Nature Reserve.

The specialists and rangers do collaborate in field monitoring studies on the re-introduced marmot populations in the parks. The marmot mortality is low within the re-introduction sites and the pilot project needs to be replicated and expanded into the rest of their neighbouring areas, according to the WWF-Mongolia specialists.
