WWF Mongolia, in collaboration of eco club students, organized an annual  mongolian gazelle protection forum “Steppe Beauty” in centre of Sukhbaatar province.  This year’s event was hosted with a motto “Let’s Protect mongolian gazelle range” and a full of interesting and informative activities focused on the mongolian gazelle conservation. It reached out to over 400 individuals including school children and representatives of parents, business entities, and government institutions.  At the event opening, the school children showed artistic performances “A Ballad of Mongolian Gazelle”.
In addition, there was a photo exhibition “Nature friendly Mongol” organized during the event. The exhibition was displayed by many interesting photos of natural wildlife, threatened and endangered fauna and flora species, and steppe in their natural states, the climate change related photos showed how the natural resources have been lost due to natural and human induced activities, and the photos of wildlife conservation and habitat improvement initiatives being undertaken in local areas. The photos were very informative for the event participants: school children and other local visitors.
S. Nandintod, a member of “Nogoon Ireedui” eco club said “the photos displayed on the exhibition give us a comprehensive picture on how we, the human, unintentionally or intentionally disturb the wildlife habitats and ranges. I have learned a lot from the photos. Let’s protect the mongolian gazelle”.
Eco-club students were active in discussions held during the event shared many concerning issues and solution ideas for the mongolian gazelle conservation.  Their ideas shared include, among others, a proposal for listing the mongolian gazelle in the Red Book of Mongolia and the nomination criteria of “Best Herders” must include the herders’ effort to protect the environment and wildlife within their residential areas.
Recently, the mongolian gazelle population has declined and become one of the region’s priority concerns.  The most serious threats to the species include unsustainable use of hayfields in the region, steppe wildfire, and illegal hunting, among others.  The event participants have agreed on that policy oriented conservation actions required active and effective stakeholder engagement must be a key to the species conservation.
Eco club members showed their motivation to share their knowledge, perception, and initiatives towards the gazelle conservation during the annual event. They raised and presented multiple concerning issues related to the gazelle conservation to local decision makers having sought for a collaborative effort to protect the species and its ranges. At the end of the event, the participants issued a declaration on the mongolian gazelle conservation agreed on reporting of their performance on the next year’s meeting. The declaration includes the initiatives to have a nationwide Mongolian Gazelle day, a lobby group of eco club members in Eastern Mongolia, and a procedure for responsible pastureland use in each soums in the region.
