A Photo exhibition on success stories and achievements

To successfully implement the forest management plan, the parties initiate and make effort under the campaign. Recently, a photo exhibition was organized in the centre of Chinggis town of Khentii province to publicly share and inform about what the parties have done under the annual campaign. The exhibition was visited and seen by over 800 local people including representatives of FUGs from the all sub-provinces of Khentii province and the local government officials and officers, as well as students from local schools in the sub-province.

WWF-Mongolia, in collaboration with the parties, has been successfully organizing an annual campaign “Tree Retains Water-Water Retains Life” since 2017 as a leverage of implementation of plan for Onon River Basin’s sustainable forest management. Under the campaign, the parties engaged in the plan implementation have had a tradition of tree planting to support natural forest regeneration, where they have a planted forest stand, which is annually expanded by conifer seedlings during spring and autumn planting seasons, increase their seed funds, and grow tree seedlings for planting. Moreover, local forest user groups (FUGs) in the eastern region are provided with financial and technical (methodological) supports and consultation and experience sharing meetings that are much helpful and supportive for their planting practices.

The campaign “Tree Retains Water-Water Retains Life” has enabled the parties to jointly do many constructive works and the local communities to actively engage in the campaign activities.  For instance, to date, there are about 10 per cent of the total households residing in the centres of 14 sub-provinces of three eastern provinces have planted trees in their khashaa (a plot of privately owned land of households). Local communities of Dadal sub-province of Khentii province have had a 10 ha of planted pine forest stand between 2017 and 2022.  All these successes and achievements were a spotlight of the photo exhibition.  FUGs in the River basin prepare pine and larch seed funds and seedlings for planting and forestation within their areas. Another spotlight of the photo exhibition was to inform that there was non-occurrence of forest steppe fire that was previously often caused by illegal human activities in the  forested areas.  Local communities were in favour of organizing such an exhibition annually regarded it as an effective way of showcasing the achievements under the campaign in the future.
