Mongolian saiga antelope killed by vehicle in western Mongolia
On 30 September 2024, an unfortunate incident has raised renewed concern for wildlife protection in Mongolia. Specialists from WWF-Mongolia, during a field trip in Mankhan soum, Khovd province Altai-Sayan ecoregion, discovered a Mongolian saiga antelope that had been killed by a vehicle on a nearby highway.
E. Galbadrakh, Communications officer from the Field Office of WWF-Mongolia, stated, "While conducting monitoring work, we found a Mongolian saiga antelope that had been struck and killed by a vehicle on the highway. Our biologists believe the animal was a calf, born this year, and was likely crossing the road with its mother when it was hit. Its body showed severe damage, with the skin torn off. This is not an isolated incident: three years ago, we encountered three saiga antelopes killed in a similar manner in Gobi-Altai province. Herders in the area have reported that these occurrences happen frequently. It is clear that decision-makers need to address this growing issue."
In 2018, national standard for Wildlife crossings for highways and railroads in mountainous and forested areas MNS 6735:2018 was approved. However, the road where the incident occurred was constructed in 2015, three years before this standard was enacted.
The recent saiga death highlights ongoing challenges in its implementation, particularly in the road sector. For last three years, WWF-Mongolia, through the USAID-funded ALIGN Project, has partnered with various stakeholders on a range of initiatives to ensure the standard. These include providing meetings, trainings and raising awareness about the national standard for highways and railways.
WWF-Mongolia calls on decision-makers and relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of the standard to protect the endangered Mongolian saiga and other vulnerable wildlife from further harm.
