Wildlife rescue team provided with necessary equipments
End of September 2022, WWF-Mongolia handed over first aid boxes and equipment packages that consist of necessary tools and equipment to help handle and transportation of wild species in need to the rehabilitation working groups in Altai Sayan ecoregion particularly, Bayan-Ulgii, Uvs, Hovd, and Gobi-Altai provinces. The rehabilitation working group is set up by decree of the provincial governor and concludes respective professionals representing the Department of Environment and Tourism, Veterinary Department, Specialized Inspection Agency, Police, Emergency Management Agency, Forensic Service, Zoonosis Research Center, and Health Department.
This has been done within the framework of enforcement of the “General and Special Requirements for Wildlife Conservation” standard includes the following four chapters: 1. Wildlife rescue and care activities general requirements; 2. Special requirements for mammals; 3. Special requirements for birds; 4. Special requirements for amphibians and reptiles. In December 2021, the Mongolian Government Agency for Standardization and Metrology approved the standards which entered into force as of 10 January 2022 with a successful advocacy effort of WWF-Mongolia with the Ministry of the Environment and Tourism of Mongolia. Previously, the working group has provided training and a handbook on "Wildlife Conservation and Care Methods” and “Basic Knowledge and Skills for Wildlife Rescue and Care” to target provinces.
Since their establishment, the teams have been functional and carried out at least 2-3 rehabilitation operations between 2021-2022. In August 2021, Uvs province [SG1] team successfully carried out a rehabilitation operation on a bear cub within 2 days. A bear cub was captured in Durgun soum of Khovd province and handed over to Red Taiga Protected Area`s administration which took a 1200 km distance trip. The Red Taga Protected Area`s administration will take care of the cub during the winter and released it to the wild in May 2022. The operation was involved 3 provinces Environment and tourism department and those who involved in the operation were trained on-site led by Uvs specialized unit.
