Citizens enhanced their knowledge of high mountain ecosystems
Participants emphasized the importance of regularly organizing public-oriented training and awareness-raising activities on glacier melt, water scarcity, and sustainable water use in the future. They also noted the need to increase the involvement and initiative of local decision-makers.
In recent years, experts have warned that climate change has intensified glacier melting in the high mountains of the western region, leading to a reduction in water resources. Therefore, it has become increasingly important to improve public awareness of water-related issues and to promote habits of sustainable use. Within this framework, the WWF-Mongolia, in cooperation with partner organizations, organized a series of events titled “Altai Mountains – Glacier-Science Week 2025” at the Khovd universtity from December 5 to 11, 2025.
Held in conjunction with International Mountain Day, the event brought together approximately 400 participants, who enhanced their understanding of the importance of high mountain ecosystems, ways to adapt to climate change, and the value of water resources. In addition, a variety of activities were organized, including a mountain-themed quiz competition, a climate change story-writing contest, a photography exhibition focused on snow-capped mountains, and a scientific conference, all of which saw active public participation.
