A new design is being used to fencing the head of natural spring

In the previous design, fences were constructed vertically at a 90-degree angle, making them vulnerable to damage from camels, horses, and cattle rubbing against them. The new design features fences sloped inward at a 60-degree angle, reducing the risk of such damage. Triangular supports are now used for anchoring, eliminating the need to dig holes and install posts. This innovation improves resistance to seasonal ground freezing and thawing.

There are few natural springs in the Great Lakes Depression of Mongolia — the habitat of the Mongolian saiga. Most of these springs are used by thousands of livestock and numerous herder households. Due to overgrazing and trampling by large numbers of livestock, many springs are experiencing reduced water flow or are drying up entirely, negatively impacting the water supply for wildlife.

To solve this issue, WWF-Mongolia initiated a collaborative effort with relevant stakeholders to protect and fencing the head of natural springs. Fencing the source of the spring caused an increased runoff, which has a positive effect on wildlife.

However, after fencing several springs, it became clear that improvements were needed. As a result, a new and improved design was developed in 2025 and is now being implemented for spring protection.

Additionally, metal mesh fencing has been replaced with angle iron, making the structure stronger and more durable. As a result, the fences can now last many years without requiring frequent repairs.
