WWF-Mongolia initiated "Plastic free rivers" campaign to engage stakeholders in removing plastic waste from the rivers. The initiative started successfully with the involvement of citizens in removing plastic waste from Kherlen River in the eastern part of the country. In the first phase, waste cleaning along the Kherlen River was carried out in July 2018 and 105 tons of garbage was cleaned.

Lately eco club children joined to the initiative. Governor's Office of Dornod province and the Kherlen River Basin Administration organized a meeting on October 9-15, 2018, in order to increase the involvement of eco clubs on "Plastic free Kherlen" campaign. During the meeting, the campaign was broadly presented and international experience in children’s involvement for plastic waste management was introduced in Dornod, Khentii province and Baganuur district.
Afterwards, an open forum for eco club was organized and a work plan for waste reduction was developed. Picnic goers produce so much plastic waste when they relax near the riverbanks. Therefore, organizers point out it is important to promote plastic waste harm.
